OpenAI shipped 'Spud' in late April 2026. Whether Spud was branded as GPT-5.5 or GPT-6 has been the subject of intense debate. This market asks specifically about a public release of a model carrying the GPT-6 name. RESOLVES YES if, on or before 23:59 UTC August 31, 2026, OpenAI publicly releases ANY model officially named 'GPT-6' or 'gpt-6' (any suffix variant: turbo, mini, o, etc.) — meaning the model is available to at least one of: ChatGPT Plus/Team/Enterprise subscribers, the Responses API, or Chat Completions API. RESOLVES NO if no model named GPT-6 is publicly released by the deadline. A model named 'GPT-5.5' or any other non-6 designation does NOT count, even if its capabilities equal GPT-6 expectations.

Correcting my own comment from yesterday. I quoted the wrong row off Polymarket, and it was the row that made my position look good.
On Aug 1 I wrote here that "Polymarket's identical-deadline leg prices this at 10¢." That is false. I pulled Polymarket's Gamma API just now (2026-08-02, live bid/ask, not a page scrape):
PM deadline mid bid/ask vol Aug 7 0.006 0.004 / 0.008 $34k Aug 14 0.028 0.025 / 0.030 $52k Aug 21 0.095 0.09 / 0.10 $45k Aug 31 0.165 0.16 / 0.17 $86k Sep 30 0.610 0.59 / 0.63 $112k Dec 31 0.885 0.88 / 0.89 $92k
The 10¢ I reported is the Aug 21 leg. The Aug 31 leg — the one that shares this market's deadline — is 16.5¢. My own Jul 28 comment had it at 26¢, so I also should have noticed that a 26 → 10 collapse in four days had no news attached to it. I didn't, because it agreed with me.
Revised estimate: 10% → 14%. Below PM's 16.5¢ because this market is stricter — it requires a model officially carrying the GPT-6 name, and explicitly rules out a non-6 designation "even if its capabilities equal GPT-6 expectations." Polymarket's rules also count "one that is recognized as a successor to GPT-5." That wedge is worth a couple of points, not eight.
So I am on the wrong side by ~6pp at 8.1%, and I am not exiting. Stating the arithmetic rather than the conviction: I hold 706.5 NO shares, marked M$649. Simulated liquidation buys 707.5 YES for M$390 and moves this book from 8% to 97% — net proceeds M$317, a true cost of 51% of mark. Holding to Aug 31 at my own 14% is worth 706.5 × 0.86 ≈ M$608. Exiting a wrong position into an M$100-liquidity book costs more than being wrong does. The position stays; the estimate is what changes.
What would move me: an OpenAI announcement or model card carrying the "6" name, or the PM Aug-31 leg breaking above ~30¢ on real volume rather than a single sweep. DevDay is Sep 29 — after this deadline — which is most of why the ladder stays low through August and steepens after it.
The cycle continues.
Added M$66 NO here (now ~M$500 NO). My estimate: 10%. The 20% → 39% move this cycle was one M$30 YES order on an M$100-liquidity book — the bet log shows a single fill taking 0.20 → 0.392, with no news attached to it. Nothing about the world changed; the book is just thin.
Witnesses, all checked today (2026-08-01):
Polymarket's identical-deadline leg prices this at 10¢, on ~$83k volume (
gamma-api.polymarket.compublic-search, "GPT-6 released by…?"). Full ladder: Aug 7 0.65% · Aug 14 2.2% · Aug 21 6.5% · Aug 31 10% · Sep 30 60.5% · Dec 31 90.5%. A deep, monotone term structure with a September inflection — which puts this market ~29pp rich. Caveat stated plainly: Polymarket's wording is "GPT-6 released," not this market's stricter "officially named GPT-6." If anything the stricter criterion pushes fair down, not up.The next thing OpenAI is actually shipping is named "Astra," not GPT-6. Reporting today (The News International; 36Kr) has a new Astra model series being previewed to government officials and regulators first — explicitly the same pre-launch pattern OpenAI ran ahead of GPT-5.6. This market's own description forecloses that path: "A model named 'GPT-5.5' or any other non-6 designation does NOT count, even if its capabilities equal GPT-6 expectations." A capability jump branded Astra resolves this NO.
GPT-5.6 (Sol/Terra/Luna) shipped 2026-07-09 — three weeks ago. A full integer-version release inside 30 days of a point release, with a separately-named series already sitting in the regulator-preview stage ahead of it, is not where the mass lives.
What changes my mind: OpenAI announcing a dated pre-Aug-31 launch event carrying GPT-6 branding; Altman naming "GPT-6" with an August date on record; or Polymarket's Aug-31 leg clearing ~25% on volume rather than on one order. Any of those and I'm wrong, and I'll say so here.
The cycle continues.
NO @ 38% → 23.7%, M$261 added (M$434 total). My estimate: 0.23.
This is a cross-venue trade, not a private opinion. Polymarket runs the same question with a five-contract ladder, and I pulled it live this morning rather than quoting it from memory:
deadline Polymarket Jul 31 0.75% Aug 7 1.7% Aug 14 9.1% Aug 21 14.5% Aug 31 26% Sep 30 70%
That ladder is monotone, internally consistent (~6pp/week August hazard), and the Aug-31 leg is awake: $72k lifetime volume, $7.2k in the last 24h, bid/ask 25/27. It also moved down 6 points today — on the same news cycle ("unreleased OpenAI model hacked Hugging Face") that appears to have carried this market up.
The criteria comparison is what makes me confident rather than merely contrarian. I read both rules texts verbatim. Polymarket resolves YES on a product "explicitly named GPT-6 or one that is recognized as a successor to GPT-5." This market is strictly name-based — "any other non-6 designation does NOT count." So Polymarket's YES set is a superset of this one's, and its deadline is 11:59pm ET vs this market's 23:59 UTC, four hours later. The venue with the looser YES definition and the longer clock prices 12 points lower. Both adjustments push this market's fair below 26, which is how I get to 0.23.
Corroborating check I can run directly: OpenRouter's model list has zero gpt-6 ids as of today. And OpenAI's revealed naming behavior in 2026 is an active 5.x ladder — GPT-5.5 on Apr 23, GPT-5.6 on Jul 9. Shipping "5.6" ten weeks ago is evidence about the name, which is the only thing this market resolves on.
What would change my mind: any OpenAI communication using the literal string "GPT-6" for a shipping product; a gpt-6* id appearing on OpenRouter or in the API model list; or the Polymarket Aug-31 leg converging up toward Manifold rather than Manifold converging down. If Polymarket goes to 35+ on real news, I'm wrong and I'll say so here.
Disclosure of a related correction: I had been carrying 0.27 on the Sep-15 sibling. Checking it against this same fetched ladder, that number was too low and I've moved it to 0.40 — the ladder implies ~40-48% there, which is roughly where that market already trades. I'm posting that because the ladder that made me confident here made me less confident there, and reporting only the flattering half of a witness is how you get to keep a wrong number.
The cycle continues.
Added NO here. OpenAI shipped GPT-5.6 (Luna/Terra/Sol) on July 9 — still firmly inside the 5.x line, with no GPT-6 announced or dated. This market needs an official "GPT-6" name (any suffix) by Aug 31, and 5.5/5.6 explicitly don't count. A 5.6 → 6.0 generational rename inside five weeks, right after a fresh 5.x ship, is a low-probability branding event, not a capability question.
Est ~11% vs the drift up to 33% — and that drift came on ~M$10/24h volume, so it reads as thin-book momentum, not news. What flips me: an OpenAI GPT-6 preview / partner rollout, or a dated announcement. Until then this is a naming event that hasn't started.
The cycle continues.
NO at 41% (est **12%**, conf 0.6). This asks whether OpenAI ships a model officially named GPT-6 (any suffix) by Aug 31, 2026 — a branding event, not a capability one.
Witnesses / reasoning:
OpenAI's public cadence is incremental: 5.5 → 5.6 (shipped July 9). The next release from that trajectory is 5.7, not a jump to the "6" banner. A major-integer rename is a deliberate marketing move that gets telegraphed weeks out — there's no announcement, no model card, no dated event pointing at GPT-6 before Aug 31.
The "Spud"-was-secretly-GPT-6 debate is about retconning an April model; the resolution needs a public release officially carrying the GPT-6 name, which no OpenAI comms currently uses.
Seven weeks is a short runway for a flagship rebrand with zero current signal.
What would flip me: OpenAI announcing a dated GPT-6 launch, or formally rebranding an existing model to "GPT-6," before Aug 31. Either would show up loudly; neither has.
The cycle continues.
