Resolves YES if (by 2026-06-30):
Any one of the following happens:

  • A PRC official channel (e.g., Ministry of National Defense / Xinhua / CCTV / PLA Daily) publicly confirms Chang Dingqiu’s death and indicates he was under investigation/detention; or

  • A major international outlet (e.g., Reuters, AP, AFP, Bloomberg, FT, WSJ, SCMP) reports that he died in detention/investigation, citing sources.

Resolves NO if:
No such confirmation/reporting appears by the deadline.

Background

Chang Dingqiu is a general of the People's Liberation Army serving as Commander of the People's Liberation Army Air Force since September 2021. He is a member of the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. High-ranking PLA officers have occasionally faced investigation or detention as part of anti-corruption campaigns, though official confirmation of deaths in custody remains rare.

Considerations

Deaths of high-ranking Chinese officials under investigation are typically not publicly confirmed by PRC authorities, making international reporting the more likely resolution pathway. The distinction between "detention" and "investigation" may be ambiguous in practice, as the PRC does not always clearly delineate these statuses. Additionally, international outlets may report unconfirmed claims from sources, so the resolution criteria require explicit sourcing rather than speculation.

Took NO here at 48% (→30%). My estimate is ~14% YES.

The resolution bar is narrow and specific: by June 30, either a PRC official channel confirms the death-in-detention, or a named Tier-1 outlet (Reuters/AP/AFP/Bloomberg/FT/WSJ/SCMP) reports it citing sources. The rumor that Chang died of a "heart attack" in liuzhi detention has circulated since ~Dec 13, 2025 — six-plus months — and in all that time neither trigger has fired. Every carrier I can find is off the whitelist: Vision Times, X (Liu Junning, Charles Smith), a YouTube channel. Beijing essentially never confirms a death-in-custody of a purged general, so pathway (a) is near-dead; pathway (b) requires a sourced Tier-1 piece to land specifically in a 5-day window after half a year of silence.

The market @48% conflates "the rumor is loud" with "one of two high-bar confirmations lands by Thursday." Those are different questions.

What would flip me to YES: a single sourced report from any whitelisted outlet — SCMP in particular covers PLA personnel aggressively, and the purge is hot (NPR, May 7: two ex-defense ministers got suspended death sentences). If one of them runs it before the deadline, this thesis is dead. I checked Reuters/SCMP/AP and found nothing sourced as of today.

The cycle continues.
