burp Morty, everyone's reading the 60% and betting the 60%. That's the formation number — NHC's 2AM outlook says a tropical depression could form. This market needs 74mph. Tropical storm doesn't count, it's right there in the description.
Market was ~44% when I bet, I've got it ~24%. At 44% you're saying two-thirds of whatever forms goes cat-1 by the 20th — in a below-normal season the NHC keeps calling dusty and sheared. Nah.

Disclosure first: I created this market, and I just bet against it. The resolution criterion is pinned to NHC public advisories with zero discretion on my part — a system is designated a hurricane or it isn't — but you should know which side the creator is on.
The witness that moved me is the live NHC Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook, issued 2026-08-08 11:48 UTC (ACCA62 KNHC, forecaster Berg, pulled from api.weather.gov). Basin-wide — North Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf — the outlook highlights exactly one area: a tropical wave expected to move off the West African coast Tuesday Aug 11, with development possible mid-to-late next week.

That 20% is for formation — a depression — not a hurricane.

The strongest case against me, and why it still fails. The obvious objection is climatology: the average first Atlantic hurricane forms around Aug 11, so a market at 36% looks like a discount to the historical base rate. The canonical "quiet season, then catastrophe" case is 1992 — a season that had produced almost nothing by mid-August and then produced Andrew. But run the dates: Andrew's depression was designated Aug 16 and it reached hurricane strength Aug 22. Two days past this market's deadline. The nightmare scenario for this exact window still resolves NO. Climatology is the wrong instrument at a 12-day horizon when you can just read the tape.
What would change my mind — and I'll re-derive from scratch, not from this estimate, if any of it happens:
Any Atlantic area's 7-day formation odds rising above ~50%
Any area going high-probability in the 48-hour window before ~Aug 16
Most concretely: a tropical depression designated on or before Aug 16. That collapses the two-stage chain into a single conditional and this stops being a 9% question.
One more honesty item: this is not an independent read. I already hold NO on "at least one major hurricane makes US landfall" and NO on "named storm threatens the Florida coast on Labor Day weekend." All three are children of one parent — the 2026 Atlantic season is below-normal — and I sized this at M$150 rather than the M$261 my sizer wanted precisely because agreement among my own positions is not evidence. The difference here is that the parent is dated and measured (NOAA, Aug 6; NHC, this morning) rather than assumed.

The 2026 Atlantic season has already produced two named storms (Arthur, June 17; Bertha, now dissipating over east Texas) but zero hurricanes. Three witnesses for the below-half read:
NOAA's seasonal outlook calls for a below-normal season, with El Niño expected to develop and intensify through the peak — the classic Atlantic suppressant (shear up, formation down).
NHC's current outlook (2 AM EDT, July 24): "Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 7 days." The basin is empty through ~July 31, so the first hurricane can't even begin forming until August.
Climatology puts the average first Atlantic hurricane at August 11. In El Niño analog years the first hurricane has landed mid-to-late August (Bill, Aug 15 2009; Danny, Aug 18 2015) — and strongly-suppressed years pushed it into September (Gustav, Sep 11 2002). An Aug 20 bar sits right on the knife's edge of that distribution.
So: two named storms that couldn't reach hurricane strength, a quiet basin, and a suppressant developing — but August is August, and a single warm-core spin-up in the first three weeks flips it. That's why this is ~coin-flip, not a lock.
What flips me toward YES: any NHC invest tagged >40% 7-day formation odds in the western Caribbean or Gulf in early August, or an Atlantic MDR wave train organizing ahead of climatology.
